What does the CS stand for?

What does the CS stand for?

Mary Baker Eddy

Christian Science:

The universal and eternal science — or knowledge — of all Being. An equivalent term might be “The Science of Being,” since it definitely doesn’t exclude Jews, or any other religious or spiritual tradition. The origin of the word "Christian" is rooted in consecration and inspiration. The word "science" has to do with discovery, learning, understanding, and knowing. Thus Christian Science welcomes all sincere seekers of Truth.

Christian Science specifically is the spiritual healing tradition Janis Hunt Johnson practices. The “CS” designation after her name means that she has completed formal Christian Science Instruction (with an annual refresher course) and works professionally for the public as a Christian Science practitioner.

CS Renewal” is Janis’ way of welcoming people of all faiths to explore this exciting form of drug-free healing, spiritual healing that recognizes no separation between mind, body, and spirit — scientific prayer which heals the whole person, without the limitations or judgments that can come from religion or dogma. This is not your Grandma's Christian Science! This is practical spirituality rejuvenated for the 21st century, yet at the same time it still preserves the letter of this profound healing science.

Mary Baker Eddy

Christian Science, (re)discovered by Bostonian Mary Baker Eddy in the 19th century, is “Christian” in that it’s the spiritual method used by Jesus to heal the sick and raise the dead. This cutting-edge Rabbi from Nazareth lived, taught, and healed according to the “Christ Consciousness” or “anointedness” that is the intrinsic nature of each of us. Christian Science is a “Science” in that it’s based on knowledge and understanding of spiritual reality rather than on a blind faith; it can be tested and demonstrated by anyone.

You can try it and prove it for yourself. You don’t have to blindly follow a leader, church, or doctrine. Christian Science, the unchanging law of God as taught by Jesus and further explained by Mary Baker Eddy in her ground-breaking book, Science & Health, can be learned and applied by ordinary people just like you and me. Regardless of your religious affiliation (or lack thereof) you can apply what you learn and watch the healings take place in your life!

Mary Baker Eddy's Publications

Mary Baker Eddy was a gutsy, outspoken pioneer, a spiritual maverick of the 19th century, and a world-famous celebrity in her time. Especially remarkable are her numerous achievements as an American woman born in 1821.

Eddy not only started the Christian Science church in Boston, Massachusetts, she self-published Science & Health while in her fifties, and also started two magazines (the monthly Christian Science Journal and the weekly Christian Science Sentinel, still in publication today). In her eighties, she had the audacity to launch The Christian Science Monitor, a Pulitzer prize–winning newspaper that since 1908 has endured as one of the world’s most respected news sources.

Eddy’s radical ideas have on the one hand exasperated and baffled many people (primarily those who don’t bother to explore her writings for themselves) and on the other hand have heavily influenced humanity’s wide scope of spiritual inquiry ever since.
